Africa’s Betting Boom: New Laws and Big Wins

31 Jan 2025

Africa is placing more bets than ever, and countries across Southern Africa are cashing in. New gambling laws, local success stories and major sporting events are creating a jackpot moment for the region.

In South Africa politicians are pushing to open up online betting. Proposed laws would bring order to the unregulated internet gambling scene. Meanwhile, licensed bookies saw bets jump 41% this year, with rugby matches and other sports driving interest.

Neighboring countries want a piece of the action too. Zambia is crafting new gambling rules to meet international standards. Angola recently OK’d licenses for online betting shops that will operate for five years. The goal is to draw local and foreign companies to set up servers and sites.

And in Botswana, 16 homegrown gambling outfits just scored new licenses. “There are big opportunities opening up,” said one industry insider. “The summit will let people learn how to place their bets here.”

The BiG Africa Summit next month will explore it all. Bigwigs from top operators and regulators will talk shop and network. They’ll share ideas on how to tailor products and marketing to African consumers based on local cultures and trends.

With new laws unlocking markets across the region, the summit arrives during a historic rush to tap into Africa’s betting potential. The odds have never been better to score big.
