“Free” Casino Promotions Must Actually Be Free

The group that keeps casinos in check spoke up recently, telling gambling venues they need to follow the rules around certain types of promotions. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) put out a statement reminding casinos and other gaming sites that if they advertise something as free play, it really needs to be free for players.

Their main rule is that people shouldn’t have to spend or risk any of their own cash to get the free offer. The AGCO said any promotions that make it seem like you’re getting something for nothing when you really have to gamble for it don’t cut it anymore. They said tricks like that are considered “misleading” now.

The reason the AGCO is cracking down on sketchy “free play” deals is they can get folks in trouble by making them overspend. If someone thinks they’re getting something totally free of charge, they may put more money down than they can afford while trying to get it. This can lead to money struggles, stress and undermined public trust.

The statement comes after the AGCO updated its responsible gambling training rules for casino and lottery workers. Sites no longer need direct approval for their employee training programs that cover safe gambling practices. But the reminder makes it clear they still need to follow standards around promotions and make sure players understand the real terms and conditions.
