GambleAware just released numbers on the donations they received during the first 3 months (April-June 2024) of the current financial year. They got £294,722.99 ($382,745) for research, prevention and help with problem gambling – this money comes from gambling companies who volunteer to give a small percentage of their profits. GambleAware also scored £40,000 from a settlement deal between one gambling company and the UK Gambling Commission.
The amount matches what GambleAware usually gets during the first quarter based on the last 4 years. The company tends to get fewer donations at the start of the financial year.
This is likely the last year donations will be voluntary. The government plans to make giving money to GambleAware mandatory starting next fiscal year. Right now, gambling companies should donate at least 0.1% of their yearly gross gambling profit. Smaller companies making less than £250,000 yearly are asked to give £250.
As we move to the new system, it is vital donations stay the same so we don’t disrupt help for problem gamblers,” said GambleAware CEO Zoe Osmond.
